Training Grant
What is the Training for Rural and Remote Procedural GPs Program?
The Training for Rural and Remote Procedural GPs Program provides financial support to GPs providing services in rural and remote locations to attend upskilling or skills maintenance activities.
The Program has two components:
1. financial support for procedural GPs providing services in the fields of surgery, anaesthetic and or obstetrics and
2. financial support for GPs providing emergency medicine services.
GPs who provide services in both surgery, anaesthetics and/or obstetrics as well as emergency medicine may be eligible for both components of the Program.
The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) administer the program on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, including determining the eligibility of GPs and training activities. Medicare Australia is responsible for making grant payments to eligible GPs on completion of the relevant activity.
Are you eligible for the Training for Rural and Remote Procedural GPs Program?
Are you:
• a GP providing surgery, obstetrics, anaesthetics or emergency services?
• Providing these services in a rural or remote area?
• attending training, upskilling or skills maintenance activities?
Then you many be eligible for financial assistance. For more information please contact either RACGP or ACRRM
How much is the grant?
Surgery, Anaesthetics and or Obstetrics
Eligible procedural GPs will receive up to $20,000 for the cost of 10 days of upskilling or skills maintenance activities each financial year. This funding may assist in the cost of training activity, locum relief and travel expenses as, in most cases, GPs would be required to leave their practice to attend upskilling or skills maintenance activities.
To be eligible you need to be a procedural GP or medical officer in RRMAs 2-7 who is currently providing procedural services in a hospital theatre, maternity setting or other appropriately equipped facility. Generally this would include surgery, anaesthetics and obstetrics.
Note: procedural GPs in RRMA 2 localities are subject to specific eligibility criteria.
Emergency Medicine
Eligible GPs will receive up to $6000 for the cost of 3 days of training activities each financial year.
To be eligible you need to be a GP in RRMA 3-7 who is currently providing emergency medicine services in an accident and emergency facility which is available 24 hours triaging, rapid diagnosis and management of acute and urgent aspects of illness and injury.
What training programs are eligible?
The grant is available for upskilling and skills maintenance activities covering both formal (eg courses) and informal (eg clinical attachments) delivery modes.
GPs are encouraged to contact either the RACGP or ACRRM before registering for the training to confirm whether the proposed training is eligible.
