The Next GP Program – Succession Planning for Rural GPs
In May 2006 the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency received funding through AusIndustry Small Business Entrepreneurship Program. The Next GP Program provides an integrated package of succession planning activities aimed general practice business owners located in rural and remote areas of South Australia. Through its unique combination of training workshops, coaching sessions and professional advisory services, this program is aimed at providing participants the opportunity to plan for their future whilst ensuring the continuity of general practice services in rural and remote South Australia.
Specific outcomes of the program include:
• Enhanced knowledge and skills development specific to succession planning
• A broadened understanding of succession issues impacting rural general practice
• Enhanced awareness around the need to plan for the future while ensuring business and service continuity
• A step-by-step succession planning resource and process to implement over the program period
